RSPB Croydon Local Group - Surveys

The Group runs two bird surveys.

The first collects information about the birds seen in or from participants’ gardens. To take part all you need do is to tick the appropriate box if a species is seen (or heard) in or from your garden during the month. We would appreciate further information about the maximum number of each species seen in your garden at any one time during the month. Although you do not have to include this additional information, a brief note about number and exact date for unusual garden visitors would be most welcome.

As well as the garden survey, we are also looking at the birds seen in various open spaces (such as parks, woods, golf courses, etc) in Croydon. Records for this do not have to be collected on a regular basis or on special bird watching visits. Even if you only go somewhere once or twice a year, any information would be useful to us. The details can be recorded in the same way as for your garden (but probably without the maximum counts). If you visit more than one site, please use a separate form for each one. Male House Sparrow
Starling If you do decide to take part in either survey, the forms can be returned either directly to John Birkett or they can be handed in at one of the group meetings or sent by e-mail. I normally like to have the completed forms every half year but this is not crucial.
We produce an annual report which details the birds seen in Croydon during the year. It includes ‘common’ species such as the House Sparrow as well as unusual birds such as the Hoopoe and Wryneck that turned up during 1997. It also tries to look at trends for the species, to see how they are faring over the years. The latest report can be obtained by post from John Birkett or the group leader, John Davis. Alternatively, you can save the postage if you come along to one of the Monday meetings when the reports will be on sale. Great Spotted Woodpecker
