Information about our indoor meetings and other events

Professional speakers draw a regular audience, but there is always room for a few more. If you see a talk that interests you why not come along and bring a friend. Our meetings are open to everyone, not just RSPB members. A selection of RSPB Goods, Nuts and Seeds are on sale. Tea or Coffee and Biscuits are free.

  • Indoor meetings are held at 2pm and 8pm.
  • Admission is £3.50.
  • Location - Old Whitgiftian Association Clubhouse, Croham Manor Road,
    off Croham Road, South Croydon. T33, 64 & 409 buses pass the door.

Monday 11th at 2 & 8pm

"Food for Birds" looks at how birds - from hummingbirds to vultures - obtain their food. Brian Nobbs
(a professional biochemist) is a keen amateur birdwatcher/photographer, and a Committee member of
RSPB Sevenoaks Local Group.

'Dinobirds'Michael Howgate MSc will take a sceptical look at the dinosaur-bird theory
which is different from the Natural History Museum position.

Monday 8th at 2 & 8pm

“Wildlife of the North Downs” will be presented by Robert Canis ARPS, a wildlife photographer and
assistant Warden of Cromers Wood Nature Reserve. He has been awarded the Royal Photographic Society’s
gold medal, and has twice been highly recommended in the BBC/British Gas wildlife photographer of the year.

Monday 12th at 2 & 8pm

“A Celebration of Birds” - Peter Holden has worked at The Lodge for 40 years and, this year was awarded an MBE for services to Nature Conservation. In September 09 his new book, 'Where to Discover Nature - a guide to the RSPB Reserves' is published. To mark these anniversaries he is to give a very personal view of the Society, the birds and a few of the people who have shaped the Society and nature conservation in Britain today.

Monday 10th at 2 & 8pm

“House Crow Corvus splendens” - a general talk on invasive alien birds around the world will focus in on the House Crow that Dr Colin Ryall has been studying for 25 years. He is currently the Senior Lecturer in Environmental Management at Kingston University and a Member of the RSPB Ring Ouzel Study Group.

“The RSPB Reserves of North Kent” will be expertly explained to us by Gordon Allison, Warden
of the RSPB North Kent Marshes, stationed at Elmley Marshes Reserve on the Isle of Sheppey.

RSPB Croydon Local Group’s General Meeting at 2pm & AGM at 8pm,

“On the Texas Trail” is a roundup of the birds unique to Texas and the southwest U.S. deserts.
Dave Hassell has 12 years experience as a YOC Group Leader and 17 years as a RSPB Local Group Committee member in Middlesex.

“Orchids” will be shown in all their exotic beauty by David Johnston, founder member of the RSPB Gravesend Local Group. He is a former Chairman of the NW Kent Group of the Kent Wildlife Trust, and a self-confessed wild orchid twitcher!

“New England Fall” will show Autumn colours in their fullest glory, with Brian Gallop guiding us through this most vivid landscape. A natural history photographer & tour leader in the UK and abroad, Brian is the past Group Leader of RSPB Tonbridge local Group.

Monday 13th at 2 & 8pm

“Urban Wildlife”Iain Green will show how adaptable species are in a manmade environment. In 2005 he published “Wild London” showing the diversity of wildlife in the city, from ancient woodlands to 10 Downing Street. Iain is an exceptional photographer who runs natural history photography workshops, and exhibits his work at Hampton Court Flower Festival & London Wetlands Centre..
